The History of Pole Dancing (according to Miss Behaviour Parties).
Pole dancing is thought to have originated as a pagan fertility dance as long ago as the 12th century. It has since, been recreated in various forms including Mallakhamb(which is yoga performed on a wooden pole by boys and men – mainly in India), Mallakamb (Indian rope tricks performed by girls and women), and even the oh-so-innocent Victorian Maypole dancing.
Pole Dancing as we tend to think of it now, evolved in the strip clubs of the 1970’s. Because it was used as a form of exotic dance in these clubs, pole dancing has since carried the connotations of being sleazy, male-orientated entertainment that is degrading to women.
Many modern styles of dance are similar to pole dancing, such as the Chinese Pole Acts, Corde Lisse and the Tissu or ‘silks’ performed in circuses worldwide. Although these styles are similar, they do not have the negative connotations usually associated with pole dancing. It seems that by giving it a different name, pole dancing becomes acceptable to the public. That’s why many studios are calling it more creative names such as ‘cardio pole’; ‘pole fitness’ or ‘sensual dance’ to try to remove the past associations with stripping.
